VCU demolition update - Before and After, Part Deux

Here's an update to the third most viewed post on the site, Five buildings VCU will tear down next month. Those five buildings are long gone, as I posted about in an update entitled: VCU demolition update - Before and After.

Here is what the 1000 block of Floyd Av looks like as of March 2013, the soon to be VCU Academic Learning Commons at 1000 Floyd Ave:

Here are the buildings that used to stand on this block: The Baptist Student Union at 1000-1002 Floyd Ave, built in 1905:

Row houses at 102 (built in 1900), 104 (built in 1900) and 106 (built in 1910) North Linden Street:

109 North Harrison Street - Education Annex, built in 1954:

  1. Of all the buildings in this post, the only one I don't miss is the education annex...that place was creepy. I used to tutor there.

  2. I never saw the inside of that building, I'll take your word for it. Always thought it looked kind of cool from the outside. And I always thought it was odd that the front faced the alley.

    1. It was rather dank on the inside, and had the feel of a prison rather than an academic building. Definitely not the best place for class. I moved my tutoring sessions to Temple after a few weeks.

  3. Pity there isn't a photo of the old BSU before the renovations that made it look like it does in the 2nd photo down. When I lived on the 3rd floor of the BSU they were 2 Edwardian row houses that looked like Edwardian row houses. Inside there was a door cut between the two parlors. I spent way too many hours of my freshman year playing pool on the second floor parlor of the building on the right. That BSU helped me keep my head on straight during those early 70s days.

    1. In between when you lived there and last year, there was a period where they had this weird 80s facade on the front. I don't have a picture from that time period though...

  4. I do have a picture with it in the background; I'll have to dig out the negative and scan it. It's from an old roll of 645 format film I found in the Commonwealth Times darkroom when it was cleaned out in 2005. I decided to develop the film and see what was on it; it looks like graduation pictures from the late '80s or early '90s.
