Richmond skyline - 1968
Today I've got a great shot of the Richmond skyline from across the James in 1968, another amazing picture from VCU's archives. I love the Chesterfield and Marlboro signs. In the foreground is the original Lee Bridge, the old factories that still operated on Belle Isle, and just a hint of the old train yard that was at the South end of the Lee Bridge.

Gosh, what a view! I remember it from WRVA Channel 12's wallboard for the news programs!
ReplyDeleteGreat picture. I even love the smoke which seems just as out of place as the Chesterfield and Marlboro signs. The smokestack is I think on Brown's Island, not Belle Isle.

ReplyDeleteGreat photo. None of the buildings I work in today even existed then. Downtown looks quite different now. I'm struck by the working factories and how visible MCV is in this photo.

ReplyDeleteThe factories on Belle Isle are indeed visible, in the lower-left corner behind the old Lee Bridge. The first time I saw this picture, I thought there was some kind of fire. I guess that much pollution is just incredible, but I'm sure it was far worse in the 19th century.
