Rhoads Hall entrance, VCU - September 1968

I don't think words can do this amazing image of the entrance to VCU's Rhoads Hall justice, so just enjoy it's mid-century modern greatness. Sadly, when VCU opened Brandt Hall in 2005, they replaced this great entrance with something much more sterile. If memory serves me correctly, up to that point it had remained largely intact, including the hanging white lights.

  1. I was put in this dorm the first year it opened.I had come to Richmond because of all the old buildings and tried my best to get transferred.

  2. I could see how in 1968 this entrance may have been a little out of place. I thought it was cool when I first saw it in 1992. The building itself? Not so much.

  3. You would be correct, it maintained the same appearance until its demolition and replacement with Brandt Hall.

  6. I was one of the girls that was transferred to Rhodes Hall as soon as it opened, I believe in the middle of the year. I think at the time only a few lower floors were occupied, the rest of the building had not been completed. I had previously resided in Scherer Hall, corner of Monument and Harrison. The old cafeteria was around the corner. Thank you for these wonderful pics!! Sandy
