Shockoe Bottom - 1980

Reader Susan Benshoff sent in these great shots of Shockoe Bottom from 1980. All of these are different angles of the intersection of N. 18th and East Franklin. The first image shows the bottom of the sign for the building on the Northwest corner. It's been abandoned as long as I've lived in Richmond, and I've always wondered why, and what it used to be. The seafood store on the opposite corner is now a parking lot.

  1. very cool post. I like seeing these types of pics. Less common than the older pics of Richmond & more familiar sites to me. Remember some of these from when I was a kid.

  2. Great to see these pictures. Is the Freemason Temple still used for anything? I've never noticed any activity there.

    1. Yeah, it's a working temple. It's home to the Richmond Randolph Lodge, I forget their number, but they meet on the first Saturday morning of each month, or at least they did.

  5. The NW corner was once Jenkin's Produce. The son was a researcher at Philip Morris. He was not much interested in the business, but his mother helped run it for a while in the early 1970's.

  7. Many of these buildings are now loft apartments. Schockoe Bottom is really having a renaissance these days.
