Boulevard - 1978

From May of 1978 comes this shot of Boulevard looking North from near Broad St. I love all the signs in this picture, especially Car Wash City. Are those the lights from Parker Field in the distance on the right? And is that the same Lighthouse Restaurant (on the left) that was in Manchester years ago?

  2. The Brooks building, the one covered in the grey and greenish corrugated metal.

  3. The Diamond, or should we say Parker Field is over the hill. I'd forgotten how many car dealerships were on the boulevard. Nice Pinto in front!

  4. I had forgotten all about the diagonal parking spaces in the center of the Boulevard - where the landscaped medians are now. I can't imagine that was ever a good idea!

  5. I also love how the North American Transmission sign is one of the only ones that's still standing today.

  6. Makes you wonder how silly our cars today will look when we reminisce 30 years from now.

  7. The Lighthouse Restaurant in the photo was there when I moved to Richmond in 1973. I assume it was not the same one that was in Manchester, but I don't know. The Lighthouse building is now a medical supply retail outlet without the lighthouse beacon.

This is pretty much the way the Boulevard looked when I moved to Richmond.

    1. There were 2 Lighthouse Rest.in Richmond. One on Hull St.and this one on Boulevard. My father used to manage both.Eventually,he took over and owned the Boulevard site.Spend many years watching the tobacco parade march by and many hours as a bus boy, cleaning tables and washing dishes by hand.

  8. I love this photo. I also spot some classic US 33/US 250 cutout shields on the right!

  9. I still travel this way almost daily. I moved to Richmond in 1980 & it just amazes me how so much has changed over the years. Thanks for the memories.
