Pontoon bridges across James River at Richmond - April 1865

Today's picture comes from the tail end of the American Civil War. I love the detail in this picture, so I included a few close ups. You can see them at the bottom of the page.

  6. The tall buildings near the other end of this bridge are the Dunlop Mills, which burned in 1949. This is indeed taken from the north side of the river, looking south. The pontoon bridge was close to where the Mayo (Fourteenth Street) bridge is today. The Southern States building and part of the flood wall currently occupy the site of the mills.
